Jesus Christ!!

This week has been one of the busiest in my life! So many things going on right now that are both scary and exciting. Can’t say much right now but I’ll be sure to spill as soon as I’m able.

One thing I can tell you is that my brother moved into a new studio in downtown Vancouver that will also be a space for me to do… Something :3, SO I painted him a mural above his door.

This is the first wall mural I’ve ever done and it was SO MUCH FUN!! I can’t wait for another opportunity :D

He wanted an image of Jesus above his door so here’s what I did.

After i found an image that I thought would work, I photoshopped and edited it into something that I wanted. Then I transferred it onto the wall.

Here i began painting the image. I uses Bher latex paint in “raven black”

20120512-124813.jpg

And this is what it ended up looking like :3

20120512-124946.jpg

So I think it turned out to be around 3 by 5 feet ish. I’m quite pleased and so is my client ;)

Anywhoo, I wanted to say that the only thing I’ve really been keeping up with is my instagram account ( I’m kind of addicted lol).

I sometimes put the images on Flickr too so you can see them there but not with all my photo’s. SO, if you have instagram come follow me over there! I’m under my full name Lauren Brevner

OO and in dolly news, I can finally start working on my bjd again because… I GOT MY WAX IN THE MAIL!!!! SOOOO EXCITED!!!! I’m going to make molds of my current sculpt and then cast it in wax to finish it up. I’ll do a fully detailed post about what it’s like to work in wax asap :D

Back to work for me folks!!

G.Y.P.O. Week 2- “Lady in waiting”

For this week’s assignment we were asked to find a painting that we love and paint our interpretation of it, whether that be in a literal sense or not. Suggestions were given to take things like color palette, lines, subject matter etc, and re-create in our own way.

So for my painting journey, and i choose the word journey on purpose, i chose this painting by Misato Suzuki

This is a new piece from her that is still a work in progress but i quite like it as it is.

I choose to use her color palette and just go from there. I had NO IDEA what i was going to paint which was completely uncomfortable for me…

This is where it started. You can see some of the color choices were definitely influenced by her painting but from here on out, their isn’t really much tying the two together..

From there i came to here this point where i was slightly more comfortable seeing as how i started painting a face ;P

And from that came this, no clue where the white lines came from but it felt right so i went with it.

I developed the face a lot more and filled in the background here. At this point i had a fairly good idea where i wanted to go with this which was a slight relief, only problem being, how do i get there?

This was taken outside yesterday when i decided to try painting in natural light to see if i could notice anything different that i wouldn’t normally under my indoor lamp light. Turns out i saw a gazillion different things i liked and didnt so i started tweaking like crazy.

And this is where i got today…

“Lady in Waiting” 2012- oil and acrylics on wood 12×16″

So she’s still not done but the background is still very wet and needs about a weeks dry time before i can finish her up. (that’s the crappy thing about oils (-_-” )

I called this piece “Lady in waiting” because technically, that’s what she is. I see this as a portrait of a lady from the industrial era who is and has been waiting for her long-lost love for centuries. This is a portrait of her now, still and forever waiting… Sad isin’t it?

There’s about 20 different layers of paint on this painting which is unheard of for me considering i usually do light washes over wood AND there was no pencil sketching what-soever. I did everything off the top of my head which was equally scary and exhilarating. I think the biggest thing that I’ve learned from this is to experiment. If i don’t like something, i can easily paint over it and try again so why not right?

Anywhoo, im completely mentally and physically exhausted after this weeks assignment. I painted every day this week for at least 3 hours on top of working on my doll AND working at my day job. But even though my back hurts and my thoughts are fuzzy, i feel like i made a real breakthrough with this painting and trying to do something completely out of my comfort zone. Cant wait to spend some more time there and grow even more.

So that’s all for now folks, until next week!!

G.Y.P.O. week one- “Balancing act”

For those of you who didnt see my other post, I’ve just joined the online painting course called “GET YOUR PAINT ON” held by Lisa Congdon and Mati Mcdonough.

In short, its a beginner painting course that is meant to help you.. well, GET YOUR PAINT ON!!! lol

Anyways, how it works is your given an assignment on the sunday of each week and you have until the following Sunday to complete it and upload a photo to the private flickr group.

The first weeks assignment was to draw inspiration from “Gee’s Bend” quilts. Here are the examples that were given:

I had a suprisingly hard time with this assignment. If you know my work, you know that it is very clean, figurative and planned out. These quits are quite the opposite of that so i had no clue what to do.

I suppose i could have just took a canvas and went at it, but i wanted to keep a little bit of my style in it. SO this is what i came up with.

“Balancing Act” 2012- acrylic on wood canvas 6″ squared

I called this piece “Balancing Act” for 2 reasons. The first one is obvious (an elephant on a ball… you can see that right?)

The second reason being my internal struggle while making this ultra simplistic piece.

I found it really hard to just go at it and do something un-planned. The colors were random on this one but i definitely had an idea of what i wanted to do.

That being said, my goal for the rest of the course is to keep trying out things that i normally wouldnt! This week was different because i did my first ever non-portrait piece which was a lot of fun!!

Anywhoo,

I’ll leave you with a picture of my ever growing and changing studio wall, Can you spot Mr. Elephant??

Although I said I would stop posting the Vlog videos on my blog, I though that these two might be a little helpful so I should share.

The video is of me sculpting the eye’s trying something a little different. Instead of sculpting them in full, I’m sculpting around a bead to make it a little easier on myself.

Anywhoo, enjoy :)

Im just doing a quick post to tell y’all that i just signed up for the 5 week online “Get Your Paint On” course held by Mati McDonough and Lisa Congdon who are 2 very talented artists.

(painting by lisa congdon)

The course is an introductory painting course for anyone from an absolute beginner (especially you peoples!!) to the seasoned pro who “needs a kick in the pants”.

Im taking the course because i thought it would be an awesome way to take some new approaches to my paintings while having fun and meeting some other cool people along the way.

(Painting By Mati McDonough)

Here’s a little description for the website on what the course is about

Artists, illustrators + close friends Lisa Congdon and Mati McDonough have joined together to bring you Get Your Paint On, a five-week online course in painting. Lisa and Mati will share what they have learned painting professionally. They’ll share their unique and colorful approach to painting in a warm and welcoming environment. This class is designed to support both beginning painters and more experienced artists.”

____

“The course is structured in five weekly increments. Sunday evening, the course for the following week is posted in a safe, private, password protected online environment. Each week will include a video introduction by Lisa or Mati (or both!), information, food for thought, technique tips, artist interviews and of course, a painting assignment! Participants can comment and ask questions in the course environment, and they have a week to finish each painting. By Sunday (though it can be done at any time during the week), participants will post their painting for the week in a private flickr group for other members of the group to see.”

The website says there’s no commitment to finish each weeks assignment, just do what you can so there’s no excuses not to do it!!

It started today but you have until the 20th to register.

The class is $129 (A steal for all the info and inspiration you’ll get) and you can sign up

HERE

So what are you wanting for!?! Come and join me so we can paint together!!!!

Hope to see you there :D!!

“Kocchi”

First off, HAPPY EASTER!!! Hope your spending it stuffing yourselves with delicious festive foods and egg-shaped goodies like i am :D

And to mix things up a bit i present you with a painting i did  a month or so ago that i never posted. No reason, just slipped my mind is all..

Here’s the post :)

I’ve always been inspired by line. Whether it be art nouveau greats like Klimt or Mucha or even master Mangaka like Miyazaki, I am constantly attracted to clean lines and bold blocks of color.

This little piece that i made a few weeks ago is a reflection of that. Heavily inspired by Japanese manga on this one, i give you “Kocchi”

“Kocchi” 5 1/2x 11 1/2 oil and pen on wood panel

This was a really quick piece that i worked on in between painting stints on a different larger piece. I had a lot of fun with the comic book type style and with the gold gel pen ;).

So that’s all folks!!

Once again, Happy easter fun times!!!

These next 4 videos are all about the hip sockets. In the end, after these videos were done I ended up re doing them anyways which will probably happen a few more times before I finish. But at least you can see how I do them. A little word to the wise though, I would really spend some time planning this part out if you want to make things easier on yourself!!

Anywhoo, here you go..

And if you don’t hear from me till then, Happy Easter!!
